The Anatomy of a 20-Metre Masterpiece
Designing a putting green for a world-class venue requires more than just laying turf. It requires a deep understanding of levels, modular construction, and drainage.
Here is how the Royal Birkdale vision is being brought to life from a construction standpoint:
1. Modular Panel Engineering
The project is built on a series of 4-metre high-density panels. Our construction team ensures these are attached end-to-end with zero tolerance for shifting. This modular approach allows for a “tensioning” phase, where the foam sections at the end of each panel allow the grass to be tightened to a specific micron, eliminating any bumps or grain inconsistencies.
2. Advanced Topography: Fillable Bunkers
A flat green is a boring green. To mimic the links-style of Birkdale, our build includes “Section AA” (as seen in the technical plans above), featuring integrated, fillable bunkers and removable raised sections. Constructing these requires precise sub-base work to ensure seamless transitions between the “fringe” and the “green”.
3. Integrated Special Effects
This isn’t just a static build. Easigrass is integrating automated technology into the base of the green. We are installing a “Hole-in-One” sensor system that, when triggered, activates confetti cannons and synchronised music. This requires a “Wooden Base Plate” design that hides all wiring and mechanical components while remaining completely weatherproof.
4. The Wooden Base & Stability
To ensure the 20-metre run remains perfectly level across varying terrain, we utilise a specialised wooden baseplate system. This provides the rigid foundation necessary for the “Removable Foam Sections,” allowing the course layout to be tweaked or maintained without disturbing the primary structure.
