PGA-Quality Golf Green at Home: A 70m² Private Green and Bunker

Creating a high-performance golf green at home takes more than installing artificial grass. On East Yorkshire's heavy clay soil, the right excavation, drainage and foundation are essential for achieving a stable surface and a reliable ball roll.

RL Golf Construction recently transformed a waterlogged rear garden at a luxury property near the A1079. The result is a 70 m² private short-game area designed to provide realistic practice year-round.

Tackling Heavy Clay Soil

Gardens across Beverley, Cottingham and Willerby often sit on dense clay soil. This type of ground can hold water, leaving lawns muddy and unusable after heavy rainfall.

To create a reliable foundation, our installation team:

  • Excavated the unstable topsoil.
  • Installed a heavy-duty foundation using Type 1 MOT stone.
  • Added a high-porosity geotextile membrane to improve drainage.
  • Applied and compacted a fine granite dust layer to create a smooth, even base.
  • Installed a specialist shockpad beneath the golf surface.

This engineered construction allows water to drain quickly, helping prevent puddles and maintaining the green's stability in all seasons.

A Complete Home Short-Game Facility

The new 70m² practice area was designed to provide a realistic golfing experience while fitting naturally into the homeowner's garden.

The installation includes:

Nylon Pro putting green

The main putting surface uses dense, non-directional Nylon Pro fibres, courtesy of our sister company, Easigrass East Riding. It is designed to provide realistic ball speed, a consistent roll and a smooth surface for practising putting and approach shots.

Tour Pro fringe

A durable Tour Pro fringe surrounds the putting area. Its dense polyethene pile helps absorb the speed of chip shots, allowing the homeowner to practise short-game control and wedge play.

Custom sand bunker

A professional-style bunker was incorporated into the edge of the green and filled with white silica sand. This creates a practical area for practising bunker recovery shots at home.

Built for Year-Round Performance

The surface and sub-base were selected to provide long-term performance with minimal maintenance.

The completed installation offers:

  • Effective drainage: The engineered base and advanced backing help quickly remove surface water.
  • Consistent ball roll: The specialist golf surface delivers a smooth, predictable playing experience.
  • UV-resistant fibres: The artificial grass is designed to resist fading and degradation caused by sunlight.
  • Low maintenance: There is no need for mowing, fertilisers or chemical weedkillers.
  • Pet-friendly materials: The grass is non-toxic and allergen-free.
  • Long-term reassurance: The products are supported by a 10-year warranty.
